the 'PRICE' is right! - social commentary by D the Bassist
So, Bob Barker has finally left the Price Is Right. I have to admit, when I caught wind of the news a few days ago, I got all nostalgic and reminisced on the days growing up with Rob Roddy, Bob Barker, and the Barker Beauties (wowsa!)
It also got me to thinking: what the hell has this show done to us? Well, I think it's simple. It taught us as a nation (maybe the world?) to not only accept advertising shoved down our throats for stuff we don't need. It ALSO conditioned us to accept higher prices on an ongoing basis. This may be a little conspiratorial, but did you ever notice how the prices always seemed a little bloated on this show? That way, when we found the products in REAL LIFE for LESS than we saw them for on Price Is Right, we thought to ourselves: DAMN, this is a BARGAIN! I MUST buy this POTATO SLICER with CAN OPENER with built-inSWINGSET NOW!!
The consumer-run capitalist nature of our society got a huge boost by shows like this, and we have YET to recover from the resulting addiction: OVERCONSUMPTION!
I'll keep this breif, but it makes me kinda sick when I think about how we as a society have been subverted by the media and advertisers to be nothing more than marketing demographics and potential customers. Pay attention!
